A world class planning is required in the today's highly competitive environment to increase the efficiency, flexibility in operations and optimum capacity utilization. Long-term capacity planning must be balanced with product portfolio development, the planning for sales and operations must balance demand and supply on a monthly level, materials and resources planning must assure that raw materials and other resources are in place at the right time, while detailed scheduling must fulfill all order needs.

This thought process is necessary to the creation and refinement of a plan or integration of it with other plans; that is, it combines forecasting of developments with the preparation of scenarios of how to react to them.

There are three major types of plans that help managers in achieving their organizational objectives. These are :-

• Tactical
• Operational

All these plans are inter related to each other. Operational plans result in the fulfillment of tactical plans, which in return leads to the achievement of strategic plans. In case, their original plans are failed, managers should also develop alternate plans in addition to these three types of plans.
